CEREC Crowns Explained

If you are in need of a dental crown to straighten, strengthen, or improve the look or shape of a natural tooth, you may be a candidate for a CEREC restoration. A CEREC crown uses computer technology to shorten the time required to place the crown. While traditional crowns require a minimum of two dental visits, a CEREC crown can be completed in just one office visit.

CEREC technology uses computer software and a milling machine to make the crown. Traditional crowns are made of metal, resin or ceramic. CEREC crowns are made of an extremely natural-looking, translucent ceramic material that closely replicates the look of your natural tooth.

Utilizing a tiny camera inside your mouth, a 3D image is made of each tooth that needs a restoration. The camera communicates with the computer, which then sends that information to the milling machine. This process is more precise than traditional crown technology, eliminating the chance of human error. The process of creating the crown can be completed in as little as ten minutes.

Once the crown is completed in the milling machine, it will be placed in your mouth with adhesive and polished. At this time, you will be good to go and carry on with life as usual. With proper care, a CEREC crown can last five to fifteen years. You should avoid grinding your teeth and chewing on hard foods or objects to help extend the life of your restoration. CEREC crowns are a wonderful option to restore both the beauty and function of your smile.
