Professional Cleanings

Regular Professional Cleanings Are Important

Professional dental cleanings are an important part of maintaining your dental health. Without proper dental cleanings, dental plaque (a soft, sticky, bacteria infested film) and tartar (also known as calculus) will build up on the teeth. If neglected, this build up on the teeth will result in gingivitis and gum disease. Untreated gum disease will eventually lead to irreversible tooth loss.  Regularly scheduled dental cleanings from our Toronto Ontario dental hygienist will help prevent these problems. Cleaning, scaling and polishing the teeth leaves the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth.  This makes it makes it hard for dental plaque and bacteria to stick to the tooth.  During your routine dental cleaning, the dental hygienist may also identify potential tooth decay and other dental issues for Dr. Yolanda Cruz to evaluate.  Above all, early detection and early treatment of dental problems are often less costly.

Dental Cleaning Process

Our Toronto dental hygienist or dentist will use specialized instruments to gently remove plaque and tartar deposits without harming the teeth.  First, the dental hygienist will use an ultrasonic hand tool to target the buildup. This device emits vibrations to knock larger pieces of tartar loose. The ultrasonic device sprays a cooling mist of water to wash away debris and keep the tooth and gum tissue at a comfortable temperature. Next, our Toronto dental hygienist will use hand tools called scalers and curettes to carefully scrape away smaller deposits and smooth the tooth surfaces along the gum line. These special tools are shaped to match the curves of the teeth. Once the hygienist has removed the tartar and plaque, the teeth are polished with a device with a soft rubber cup that rotates on the end. Then, the hygienist will apply prophylaxis paste (a special gritty paste material) to the teeth during the polishing process. As a result, the the polishing will make the teeth shiny and smooth. Finally, the dental hygienist or dentist may also apply fluoride to the teeth to help strengthen the tooth enamel.
