TMJ/TMD Oral Appliances
Oral appliances are custom-designed dental devices worn during sleep. They are used in this practice for the management of TMJ disorders and sleep-disordered breathing.
Dr. Yolanda Cruz is a general dentist. Oral appliance therapy is provided within the scope of general dentistry.
Types of Oral Appliances Used in This Practice
TMJ Orthotic Splints
Hard acrylic appliances that reposition and stabilize the jaw, reducing strain on the TMJ disc and surrounding structures. Used to address the orthopedic component of TMD.
Bruxism Night Guards
Designed to protect the teeth and reduce the forces generated by grinding and clenching. Available in hard or soft materials depending on the clinical situation.
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs)
Custom-fitted appliances that hold the lower jaw in a slightly forward position during sleep, widening the pharyngeal airway and reducing the collapse that causes apnea and snoring.
Why Custom Fabrication Matters
Over-the-counter appliances are not clinically equivalent to custom-fitted devices. A properly fabricated appliance requires accurate impressions, careful bite registration, and professional fitting. Per the guidelines of the Canadian Sleep Society, appliances for sleep-disordered breathing should be made by dentists who have received additional training in this area.
Oral appliances require regular monitoring and maintenance. Lifespan varies by device type and degree of wear.
